how extroverted hacker, maker, and coworking spaces are altering America Description: Having communal work spaces which focus outwards are more sustainable, functional, and community-changing than introverted spaces. In America, we have a change happening in how hacker, maker, and coworking spaces interact between themselves and with the communities around them. This is happening in a number of ways: breaking down divides between these functions themselves (hackers in coworking spaces, coworkers in maker spaces, more making in hacker spaces); existing spaces are forming connections to learn from each other and share resources; and reaching out to non-space organizations. In my travels for Geeks Without Bounds, a program of The School Factory (the same Non-Profit my maker space is fiscally sponsored by), I've seen this evolution in progress and have encouraged over 15 fledgling and established spaces to follow these new patterns. I will walk through the differences between our hacker, maker, and coworking spaces, and how those differences actually enhance exchanges. I’ll also cover intergenerational education, large events, and everyday projects. We’ll wrap up with how these changes will have large-scale effects of educational and humanitarian methods and ways to get involved.
