Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based systems are seen as having the greatest potential to support healthcare professionals in their decisions which permeates many application fields. Patients’ trust in the doctor-patient relationship (DPR) is one of the most significant preconditions for successful treatments. Therefore, we identified the challenges and opportunities of AI-supported DPRs through data from 15 expert interviews. Hence, we derived eight design principles for AI-based systems that improve trust in the DPR. Our findings suggest that the distribution of responsibility and power can have a positive effect on AI-supported DPR. Thereby, this paper contributes to IS research by investigating the impact of AI-based systems on DPR in healthcare and proposing design suggestions for developing these systems.
