In 2022, we sat down with legal, ethical, cybersecurity, and aerospace technology experts in outer space cybersecurity to try to understand the emerging challenges and opportunities in space cybersecurity. From that meeting, we developed a report that highlights the increasingly urgent problem and what is outer space cybersecurity and (2) how to generate novel scenarios with our ICARUS matrix, beyond the couple generic scenarios that are typically raised. In our work, we aim to balance the technical feasibility of attacks with the human impacts including hypothesizing why someone might be motivated to mount a cyberattack and who might be impacted. In this talk, we provide a briefing of the unique challenges in space cybersecurity, a summary of our work including a novel scenario generator, and an introduction to novel scenarios not previously discussed. A lack of imagination is a known risk for any security plan and can lead to being taken by surprise by adversaries – we want to avoid this in outer space cybersecurity.
