In the face of ever-expanding server fleets, obtaining comprehensive security telemetry poses a significant challenge. Although off-the-shelf solutions exist, they often fall short when dealing with larger scales, fail to meet all requirements, do not integrate well, and become prohibitively expensive as fleets grow. Contrary to common perceptions, a custom solution does not need to be overly complex and can offer numerous benefits. These advantages include simplified integration, the ability to tailor the solution to address specific business needs and queries, and improved visibility for security telemetry and compliance requirements. In this presentation, we present a case-study of what it took to build a custom solution at Stripe, covering essential aspects such as data collection, processing, and storage. Additionally, we showcase the simplicity and performance at scale, supported by real performance metrics, to underscore the immense potential of a custom visibility solution for managing large server fleets.
