Adversaries are continuing to grow sophisticated in their tooling and behavior in an attempt to evade detection analytics. The Pyramid of Pain, created by David Bianco, groups indicators, tools and behaviors into different levels reflecting how much “pain” it would take an adversary to evade detection. Detection engineers have leveraged the Pyramid of Pain to understand how difficult it is for adversaries to evade analytics, however, it does not provide a sufficient framework to quantify how robust an analytic is against adversary changes. This talk introduces a model and analytic writing guidance that goes beyond the Pyramid, allowing defenders to score how robust their analytics are, and begin to understand their true detection coverage against an adversary attack. The talk will break down the Pyramid of Pain more granularly, define analytic and event robustness measures, and walk through worked examples of how to score and improve analytics against this model. Defenders will be able to apply this process to create more robust analytics and change the game on the adversary.
