The hacker community has long conducted security research that skates the edge of legality. This has led to charges and lawsuits, bogus and serious alike. Ethical hackers have rights and defenses against legal claims, but don’t always have access to representation or resources to defend themselves. In this brief presentation, we will discuss a new resource for the hacker community: the Security Research Legal Defense Fund (SRLDF). The SRLDF is a nonprofit that is presently operational and aims to help finance representation for hackers facing legal threats due to good faith security research. This talk will cover how the SRLDF works and what is needed to qualify. The talk will share how hackers can leverage this resource to protect themselves, their rights, and others in the community.
