Tools, badges, and boards: reverse engineering and building hardware

NEEDED: Kicad tool at https://www.kicad.org/ and laptop During this workshop, the audience will learn how electrical engineers build out hardware and hackers reverse engineer it. From the badges at conferences to hardware tools and devkits, I will demonstrate how electrical engineers and reverse engineers use resources such as datasheets and reference manuals to build out hardware. This hardware will be built with a tool known as kicad and the audience should have a firm understanding of how hardware is built with it from the workshop. We will discuss and perform in order:1) EE Components and electrical design2) What hardware can be built with kicad3) inspecting and reverse engineering a schematic /reverse engineering hardware demo with tools4) making a schematic 5) building a PCB badge from the reverse engineered schematic and exporting it to gerber files for fabrication that the audience can bring to future conferences as a PCB6) discussing hardware and tools used by engineers7) discussing hardware implants and tools used by hackersThis should provide the audience with an understanding of how to build and engineer hardware and with experience, will incline. The audience should walk away with: - Understanding of Kicad and hardware design- Process to fabricate a PCB- a badge for the Texas Cyber Summit to have fabbed out (with permission to use logo)- understanding of why hardware engineering is so important for red/blue/grey/general cyber groupsI hope to achieve an audience with 90% of the badge boards built out. This will be a product that the audience can bring with them to future conferences and show off and will have a "hacking feature" built in.
