Security teams are being told to buy data security tools to keep up with new technologies, new regulations, cyber insurance requirements, and failed security audits. The data protection landscape is changing rapidly, which makes sense when you consider after 2021, there was an estimated 74 Zettabytes or 74,000,000,000 Terabytes of total data worldwide. Data Loss Prevention was a daunting task when all of the data lived in the data center, and the users were inside the WAN, but with the rapid shift to cloud, SaaS, and hybrid environments coupled with the shift to a hybrid workforce, mitigating risk around data has become an even bigger challenge than ever before. The tools for data protection have changed and the amount of tools needed to protect your critical data has grown as well and includes: Endpoint DLP, Cloud DLP, Email DLP, API DLP, CASB, SASE, and DLP as a platform feature. We will take you through the modern landscape of data protection using the Data Security Maturity Model (DSMM is a data-centric approach built by a working group of security experts from a variety of organizations.) as a framework; we will explore what solutions are available for the different functions of a data security program. We will also discuss some of the pitfalls of building a data protection program and how to avoid them.
