This talk takes a step back to consider the root causes of cyber security vulnerabilities. Why is it that we are having such difficulties securing our software-based systems? Prof. Johnson proposes that there are a handful of fundamental, intrinsic properties of software systems that have placed us in the current predicament of remarkable vulnerability to exploitation. In the talk, these root causes are reviewed and the extent to which they can be addressed is considered.
