The Dark Web is the breeding ground for malicious activity targeting public and private sectors. Threat actors looking to stay anonymous on the Dark Web slip up even with efforts to conceal their identity, location and network traffic. Online investigation can assist in identifying vulnerabilities such as the sale of attack methods, hacked credentials, insider info and intellectual property. When a viable threat has been detected, it is possible to trace it to its source, a real person. While accessing the Dark Web is straightforward, safely finding the intelligence you need is the challenge. This presentation will explore techniques that can be used to bring a Dark Web user into the Surface Web/Clearnet. This session will cover: How the TOR browser works and methods for safely using it during an investigation; How to bring leads from the Dark Web to the surface; Popular markets where assets and information is sold; Strategies to keep up with current Dark Web sites and markets; and Tips and tricks for investigating malicious activity on the Dark Web.
