Fake, Fraud and Forgeries: A "Forensicator’s" Guide to Questioned Digital Document Examination

About two years ago there was a noticeable rise in “fake news websites” and “deceptive news articles,” many shared as “genuine” on social media. On the digital forensic front, was a corresponding increase in clients asking for assistance in evaluating the authenticity of electronic documents. At this time we saw many conference talks, online blogs, and academic papers addressing the problem of detecting altered/manipulated pictures and videos. Nevertheless, there was not much discussion on the detection of modified electronic documents such as PDFs and Microsoft Word files. This session will discuss and demonstrates how to discover signs of forged/faked digital documents, specifically Microsoft office documents and PDFs. Using only free tools, techniques, and novel approaches, a forensic investigator will gain an understanding of actionable methods to uncover fraudulent documents and assist in questioned digital document examinations.
