Presented at GlobalPrivacySummit 2019 by

Genomic data is an invaluable source of information that has transformed biomedical research, personalized medicine and drug development. Thus far, there have not been very effective methods to de-identify genomic data to allow it to be used and disclosed for secondary purposes. For example, the de-identification standards in HIPAA are difficult to apply to genomic data in a meaningful way. In practice, many organizations follow a risk-based approach and use administrative, physical and virtual controls as the means of identity disclosure control when sharing genomic data. However, recently there have also been advances in privacy-protective methods that allow secure computation on genomic data. In this session we will discuss the current data protection practices for genomic data, how these meet regulatory expectations, and what the future holds for protecting such sensitive information while still allowing it to be used to benefit humanity. What you’ll take away:Understand the current data protection practices for genomic data and how they meet regulatory expectationsLearn about potential privacy engineering solutions and practical governance mechanisms that could mitigate re-identification risks
