For the past 30+ years, Industrial Control System networks have been largely proprietary, with the attendant issues brought by proprietary systems including a lack of choice, lack of portability of applications and interoperability challenges. In addition, unique security and risk challenges exist in control systems networks. Beyond industrial control networks, the Internet of Things introduces additional (but different) security challenges. Without a doubt, the rapid development of IoT capabilities & devices will affect industrial control system networks. This presentation will explore developments and challenges in industrial control systems networks and in IoT. A new standard, the Open Process Automation Standard, with industry support from large users of control systems as well as most major manufacturers of these systems, will bring a sea change to control systems, with the opportunity for significant advances in the security of these networks. The convergence of industrial control systems and IoT will also be explored.
