Three constellations of technologies are routinely cited these days as being the instruments through which geopolitical strategies and massive economic and societal disruption will be enacted in the coming decades: artificial intelligence; space engineering; and quantum computing. There’s no doubt that two of those three technologies have already been profoundly disruptive, ranging all the way from working out where to buy coffee in an unfamiliar city through to influence on Presidential elections in previously stable democracies. The third, quantum computing, is moving out of the furthest reaches of weird and quirky and increasingly being viewed as a technology of strategic importance. In this presentation, I will chart the trajectory of the development of quantum technologies and continue the throughline into where these may go over the next decades. I then go on to talk about some of the interesting possibilities that arise from the interplay between those three technologies as well as the strategic, economic and cultural ambitions of the society in which they’re embedded.
