This session will discuss a research study whose main objective was to develop a methodology that might assist digital investigators to extract and analyze third party application data during a criminal investigation so that the following questions might be answered: Who has the user been communicating with and when? What was the content of the communication? What attachments were exchanged and where can they be found? While there are many third-party applications in use today, the methodology offered here deals only with analyzing and extracting digital artifacts from the popular third-party application, WhatsApp while operating on the Android platform. A comprehensive description of the evidentiary artifacts created by WhatsApp is provided by the authors. Most importantly, this research augments current work in the literature where such specific results related to Whatsapp on Android devices were not discussed.
