Investigators have more tools than ever before to forensically examine phones, but what are the solutions when the phone is not working due to water or physical damage? The sensitive electronics inside today's mobile devices can be quickly overcome by liquid intrusion or physical impact. The results is a non-working phone and that often can't be fixed by simply changing screens or batteries. Unless the phone can be made working again, investigations are stopped, and the truth remains hidden. What can be done? In this session, attendees will be introduced to extreme data recovery methods that have successfully recovered data from phones that have been broken, smashed, or water damaged. The presenter will show how it is possible to fix many of these devices using microsoldering, reversing the effects caused by shorted and failed components as well as detail the steps needed for an attendee to set up their own extreme data recovery lab.
