Domain names are the real estate of the internet. With every decade it becomes more and more apparent, how important it is to not lose control of one's domains. Even more so if those belong to a business.Sometimes domains tend to expire either due to negligence or bad decisions. This leads to the release of the domain and allows the bad guys to take it over, consequentially taking over all communications.In this research the author studies what exactly an attacker stands to gain by taking over a recently released domain name (dropcatching), what are the risks posed to the previous owner, and how to properly balance the necessary financial investment against these risks.This talk is meant for an audience with medium technical knowledge.
