2018 is an important year for privacy law and legislation. The much anticipated decision in United States v. Microsoft Corp. interpreting the contours of the Stored Communications Act was mooted by the recently passed Cloud Act. The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into effect for enforcement on May 25, 2018. In tandem with these legislative changes, the internet is continuing to see the dark side of the endless thirst for your personal data – from Cambridge Analytica’s untoward activities, to the emerging danger of professional internet trolls and bots seeking to shape our perceptions. The talk will explore how we got here, what is changing, and why 2018 will be a pivotal year for data privacy and the internet.
