The world around us is continually and rapidly becoming connected to the Internet via a plethora of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Many security issues with existing IoT devices are well known and while some vendors are paying increasing attention to security, many are not. Some of these IoT devices, such as smart refrigerators, are designed to be durable and have long lives, will there still be patches for your refrigerator in 5, 10, 15 years? This is a problem that is only going to get worse before it gets better. So, what can we do about it? Insecure IoT devices are not only a problem for the owners of these devices, but as Mirai has taught us, they are a threat to the infrastructure of the Internet itself. This talk discusses issues involving insecure IoT and is an introduction to ideas and techniques which can be used to reduce the impact of insecure IoT devices on our lives, and on the Internet.
