Robert has worked in the field of Unix, Linux and BSD systems since 1995. His work includes diverse environments, ranging from strict operations and maintenance in the public sector, to rapid development in the private sector. Carleton was previously on active duty in the US Navy where he specialized in electronics. Robert later worked as a government contractor and civil servant, working mostly at Commander U.S. Pacific Fleet and U.S. Pacific Command. Most of that work was in Joint Command and Control computer systems. Recently Carleton worked in systems administration roles supporting development, quality assurance and production systems. He presently works as an Information Systems Security Officer for the US Army Corps of Engineers and he also serves as the Mississippi State Guard (MSSG) Public Affairs NCO and founder of the MSSG Cyber Protection Team. Rober's talk, The Mississippi State Guard Cyber Protection Team, will discuss the wide spread use of the Internet for communications and the use of cloud computing to streamline public and private sector workflow that resulted in new challenges for ensuring the security of information systems and the workflows that depend on them. The Department of Defense, US Army and the National Guard have all begun to create military units to address these issues. Some of these include United States Cyber Command and Army Cyber Command, along with several new National Guard Cyber Protection Teams. State Defense Forces in other states have already started to form their own cyber protection teams. Robert will discuss how they have the opportunity to attract computer security specialists to the cyber mission that might not be willing to go on active duty or join National Guard units. The Mississippi State Guard is in the process of forming a Cyber Protection Team for Mississippi. Robert will discuss the background of this program and the current status of its development.
