The centralization of the internet in the hands of large telecommunications companies, ISPs and service providers (Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc.) has created conditions that facilitate the regulation of the internet, the censorship of content, the erosion of net neutrality and the surveillance of communications. This has created a situation in which one of the greatest mechanisms ever created for free speech and political autonomy has also become a tool of intelligence gathering and political repression. This discussion will center around technologies that have been developed which allow for the decentralization of internet usage and service hosting, the utilization of temporary and ephemeral services and the construction of alternative networks of communication outside of the traditional large internet network based on a large centralized server-client model.
