Gartner’s Hype Cycle for Application Security 2016 states that applications, not infrastructure, represent the main attack vector for data exfiltration. Verizon’s Data Breach Investigation Report (DBIR) for 2016 states that attacks on web applications accounted for over 40% of incidents resulting in a data breach, and were the single-largest source of data loss. However, it's not obvious how exactly do the web applications cause the actual damage.
