From an outsider looking in, breaking into the Information Security world can seem a daunting task. Popular culture has conditioned us that it requires remarkable skills and knowledge just to scratch the surface. We feel that there is a better approach; one that is customizable to your background and desires. We will discuss various methods that people have used to break in to the industry, with examples from our own backgrounds and those of friends and colleagues. Our discussion will be aimed at those attending BSides who are interested in making the leap to InfoSec or to make their next career move. There are as many paths to a career fighting the bad guys as there are individuals out in the trenches. From necessary (or not) educational backgrounds, to the value of Social Engineering. We cover several approaches that you can use to kickstart a career keeping technology safe.
