Sr. Principal Scientist, SRI International, Computer Science Laboratory This is intended to be an open-ended discussion of many of the recent hot topics. For example, system security remains pitifully weak; law enforcement is seeking dumbed-down system security and cryptography; FBI vs Apple/Google/Facebook/etc.; Michael Hayden, Michael Chertoff, Mike McConnell and others stress the essential need for better security, not worse; inadequate attention to privacy; the OPM fiasco and numerous other data breaches represent the norm today, as do the SS7 vulnerabilities; there is a pervasive lack of common sense, as well as ignorance of or obliviousness to technology; and lots more. What might the future look like?
