IT work is experiencing a revolution of changing responsibilities. Work has become less job-focused and more project-focused. As the CIO for the State of Oregon, Alex Pettit has found that instead of maintaining a consistent staff, more often subject matter experts are brought in for specific deliverables, only to move on quickly to different contracts. With the advent of cloud computing, the bulk of maintenance is being handled by external service providers. Is the very nature of the CIO changing? Should IT leaders embrace or resist this change?
