Growing businesses have a lot in common, whether they are 5-year-old startups like Shinola or iconic brands like 119-year-old Filson. That’s especially true when the premise driving a company stems from a design — not fashion — standpoint, and incorporates quality, craftsmanship and job creation into its mission. Based in Detroit, Shinola has bucked trends of offshoring and re-established the region as a place to profitably manufacture. Similarly, Filson operates three factories in the Pacific Northwest that manufacture products domestically to serve its global business. Steve Bock, President of Filson and Shinola, compares and contrasts the journey these two companies have taken as domestic manufacturers in a globalized economy.
