The 2014-2015 flare up of the Ebola Virus reportedly killed 11,298 people as of 11 August 2015. Most of the victims were in western Africa. This devastating virus has resurfaced approximately 8 times in similarly dramatic fashion since it was first identified in 1976. What many people don't realize is that a relatively simple set of proven controls are documented for definitively preventing the infection of Ebola. Ebola prevention is relatively easy. Early diagnosis is virtually impossible outside of a lab. Outbreak containment is also quite difficult. A similar plague of data breaches is plaguing the entire world. As security professionals, we have responded by wrapping our systems with the best controls we can afford. However, the most effective way for hackers to attack our data and our systems is by attacking our users - and our users are still frighteningly vulnerable. This presentation will compare the Ebola protocols to a proven set of controls that we can wrap around our own computers and the computers used by the most valuable targets within our organizations.
