The need for improved information sharing amongst businesses, governments and other institutions charged with protecting sensitive information is a widely discussed topic. Improved Cyber Security information sharing holds the promise of greater efficiency and effectiveness when it comes to protecting sensitive information. While many participants in the discussion wish to consume information regarding external threats to their own organizations, those same participants are hesitant to share information with the broader community. In the absence of robust protocols for ensuring the privacy and security of data shared with the community, that reticence will remain. In this discussion, we will examine some of the barriers inhibiting greater sharing of Cyber Security information and explore some proposals for ensuring that the need for participant privacy is balanced with the community need for improved security.
