In an era of global data flows it is imperative that different privacy regimes work together to ensure continuity and consistency in privacy protections for personal data no matter where data travels. Accountability schemes designed to facilitate cross-border data transfers such as the APEC Cross Border Privacy Rules and the EU Binding Corporate Rules play a crucial role in this regard. To the extent there is substantial overlap in the privacy protections these different schemes provide, such overlap can be leveraged into regional and, ultimately, global interoperability, comprehensive cross‐regional privacy compliance for global businesses and more effective and consistent privacy protections for individuals whose data moves around the world. In this session, experts who have worked closely on EU BCRs and APEC CBPRs will discuss the features of these two systems, how they resemble each other and how they differ, and what steps are being taken to make it easier for businesses to use both. What you’ll take away: · An understanding of what it practically means to apply for BCR approval and CBPR certification · Organisational benefits of both schemes as cross-border data transfer mechanisms and as part of a long-term strategy toward effective global data governance and compliance
