"Big data" is seen as the most influential technology trend that will ‘transform how we live, work and think’ (Mayer-Schönberger and Cukier). New abilities to analyse vast amounts of data will lead to the finding of correlations between data that are unexpected and may have negative inferences for individuals. This will lead to new ethical questions about discrimination based on lifestyle, genetics, etc. What will the role of data protection be in all this (if any is left)? The reality of big data is further at odds with principles in the draft EU regulation of ‘data minimisation’, ‘purpose limitation’ and ‘informed consent’. How can we make the new regulation ‘big-data proof’? The session will discuss a number of case studies and a big data privacy code of practice that was developed in early 2014 by a leading financial services company.
