For many years firewall rules and network management was based around UDP and TCP port numbers. Today, many applications do not use standard port numbers. Sometimes this is by design and sometimes this is for evading port-based firewall rules. Application recognition is the art and science of identifying the applications that are in use on a network and understanding the impact of each application in terms of bandwidth usage, user behaviour, security, and compliance. Application layer firewalls classify traffic by protocol, not by port. Are these the answer when it comes to finding out what is happening at your network edge or do you need to look closer at internal network traffic? This session looks at developments in the deep packet inspection market, specifically around the area of application recognition and network forensics.
