Presented at AusCERT 2014 by

Weaponizing trust is the process of using one’s knowledge of social influence and the predictability of human behaviour, to achieve a particular objective. Today that objective is accessing valuable, sensitive and private information. This session uses social identity psychology as a framework to understand how people can be influenced to allow access to protected information in their possession through the manufacturing of trust. This will be explored in the context of online social networking – where there is a growing trend of using trust as a weapon to obtain business intelligence. The session will also outline the best strategies for disarming trust, and effectively defending against such a weapon.
