Historically, the healthcare sector has not been targeted by cyber criminals. Emerging trends in the United States and more recently, within Australia, are challenging the way healthcare organisations have traditionally viewed the importance of cybersecurity. Private medical practices are increasingly being targeted with ransomware. From March 2014, Australia will have an updated Privacy Act with mandatory breach notification and at the discretion of the privacy commissioner, financial penalties.
