It’s been long recognised that passwords are broken in the Internet era. They don’t scale, users forget them, systems crack them, users re-use them, and applications leak them. Biometrics has long promised to revolutionise and access control but like all other attempts to replace passwords they too have failed. Now a new industry alliance, FIDO, promises to change all of this, to deliver strong and ubiquitous biometric access control to users everywhere. Can the FIDO alliance overcome the technology, the political and the usability of concerns that have sunk all others? This presentation examines the current strong authentication and biometric landscape using original research as well as industry published information. The scope covers: Federation technologies, Rings of trust, Claims based access, Finger print recognition, Facial recognition, Behaviour recognition, Key and biometric template storage and management.
