The SDMI challenge was a call issued by the Secure Digital Music Initiative consortium to test algorithms designed to prevent online music piracy. It has been in the news recently after one of the two groups to crack it kept their findings under wraps. The researchers from Princeton University claimed publication would violate the US DMCA and demurred to SDMI's request. He and co-author Julien Boeuf were also successful in compromising the SMDI watermarking scheme. Stern will explain the problem of digital piracy, talk about several ways to deal with it, explain the SDMI position, present the results of his research, and present a general overview of the issue at hand.
