Information security is often viewed, at best, as a necessary evil. In order to truly drive relevant results, CISOs must demonstrate that they are essentially running a small business within their organization. CISOs need to maintain focus on the basics, which are the day-to-day managerial operations. They wear many hats, needing to be experts in human resources, marketing, operations, finance and sales. They must cultivate allies amongst their peers, create meaning for their subordinates and prove to their bosses that they add value. In this session, Mike Coogan, director of information security for Waste Management, will discuss governance frameworks, metrics, budgets and recruiting — the basics that build the credibility of the CISO as a business leader, rather than a technologist.
