With the media reporting that foreign spies have already penetrated our electrical grid, building a smart grid that reaches into every home may give pause to security professionals. This technical session will explore the myths and very real threats to the proposed smart grid architecture without impugning any particular vendor implementation. The panelists will also discuss the approaches to reporting vulnerabilities and whether public disclosure ever has a place in critical infrastructure. Attendees will be provided with a technical overview of some of the vulnerabilities that exist in current and proposed smart grid deployments. It will begin by providing an architectural overview of what is considered to be the modern smart grid including discussions of AMI, Distribution Automation, and Substation Automation. This will include concerns about residential meters that are exposed to physical tampering as well as attacks from inside the home through the Home Area Network (HAN) and the Neighborhood Area Network (NAN).
