Smart Grids are coming to our homes, inevitably. But what language they speak and which chats they are having is unknown to the general public. Vendors try to restrict the availability of such testing equipment, or if it is available, it is often very expensive or only available for electric utilities. This presentation will show the findings researching a widespread PLC communications protocol. And how to modify a cheap PLC sniffer device and implement a fully featured Smart Meter - PLC sniffing/debugging environment using open source software and an additional investment of 37 Euro cents. Further we will present some new attack vectors and ideas on existing chips and environments. Only in providing the tools of the trade on the cheap for the general masses, it is granted that everybody can check, research and verify the promises given to us.
