From Anonymous\'s Operation Avenge Assange to organized crime running protection rackets to the BitCoin Miner bot, there has been much press about high-volume Distributed Denial of Service attacks. However, lurking under the surface are other low-volume, "surgical" Denial of Service attacks that are receiving active research and development. This talk gives some of the history of non-volume attacks, an overview of Apache server process management, some examples of recent tools, and building defenses against them.
