Until late in the last century, cryptology and cryptographers were working almost exclusively for the military and government organizations. From the 1970s onwards, first companies and later also individuals started to use cryptography to protect their sensitive data. Cryptology became an open and lively field of research. Although in the recent past many people have benefited from the increased use of cryptographic applications, currently there are growing doubts about the trust we can put in cryptology and its applications.
